mindfulness

My therapeutic approach draws from Existential Therapy, and contemplative practice including Mindfulness (MBSR) and yoga. These different approaches allow for flexibility and adaptability according to the individual needs of each client.

Part of being human means that at some time in our life we all experience anxiety, sadness, life transitions, confusion, uncertainty and grief. Alongside the pain and suffering that the human condition can bring, there is equally the possibility of leading a meaningful and fulfilling life. It is my hope that during the process of therapy we will discover what is truly meaningful to you and in doing so uncover the resources and possibilities available to you to be empowered to lead a more satisfying and purposeful life. Working existentially helps us to find increased awareness, a new sense freedom and responsibility to take action.

Within the therapeutic context, Mindfulness is a non-religious practice. It cultivates awareness of all that arises in our present moment experience - inner thoughts, feelings, emotions and body sensations - with acceptance and compassion. It has been proven to enhance the connection between body and mind, reducing stress and helping us to step out of habitual reactive patterns of behaviour.

I offer Mindfulness practices within therapy sessions where appropriate and where the client opts for it. This approach is found to be especially helpful when dealing with recurrent depression, anger management, inter-personal relationships and life transitions.
